EPDM stands for Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer, a synthetic rubber created from oil, ethylene propylene and diene – a hydrocarbon that contains two double carbon bonds. To make it usable for roofing, the EPDM Rubber is vulcanised, (dried out), and turned into roofing membrane sheets. Drying out the rubber improves the strength and increases its resistance to heat, water and abrasion making the material excellent for waterproofing and durability.

They can stand up to extreme conditions, are fire-resistant and with their excellent flexibility (able to stretch up to 300% before cracking or splitting) they are great in freezing winters and baking hot summers. The thickness of the rubber keeps heat in during the winter months, and the sun’s heat out during the summer, reducing the need for heating or fans and with a life expectancy of a whopping 30-50 years its pretty much a one off cost and when it does need replacing you will be glad to hear the EPDM material is recyclable, making it a great eco-friendly roofing solution.
