How much does a resin driveway cost?
Its always the main question that everyone wants to know the answer to when considering a Resin Bound driveway, Patio or pathway and that is… How much does it cost?
Unfortunately, in reality this is not actually an easy question to answer without knowing a lot of important information - Is the area just for foot traffic? ie a Patio or pathway. How big is the area you are wanting to install? Is there a suitable base already installed that could simply be over-laid or do we need to install a new base from scratch? Is the installation local or some distance away? What is access like?
This said, it would be a bit of a cop out not to try and give you some indication though, so for that reason we have put our years of pricing and installing Resin bound surfacing together to try and at least give you a rough idea per square metre how much a REPUTABLE installer will at least be charging.
This guide should by no means be taken as a firm costing for any project as each installation is going to be unique and costings affected accordingly. This said below are some ideas of price based upon different scenarios.
How much is a resin drive going to cost for an overlay?
If your current driveway or patio area is concrete or tarmac, and providing the base is suitable, the install should be able to upgraded to a Resin Bound system with an "overlay".
With minimal work involved in repairing worn/cracked areas of the existing drive and edgings needing to be installed, there are no major groundworks required, thus the price for this type of install is much cheaper than a full install from scratch.
Expect to pay somewhere around -
10 - 25m2 £70/m2
100m2 + £60/m2
What is the cost for a brand new Fully SUDS compliant resin driveway, Patio or footpath installation including a new tarmac base?
If the area you are looking to install on is currently gravel, block paving, grass or slabs then this will require a full installation of groundworks which will substantially increase the cost of the driveway install.
The area will need excavating and the soil/existing material disposing of.
(Important Info... waste has to be taken away by a licenced waste carrier or you are liable and can be fined, check the installer is registered here)
Hardcore will then need installing and compacting (Make sure MOT Type-1 is used, anything else is not up to standard).
At this stage edgings will need to be set and the open course bitumen installed.
Expect to pay somewhere around -
100 - 150m2 £115/m2
150 m2 + per call 01733 306022 or contact us
The prices above are based on straight forward installs with a block edging restraint. They do not include things like recessed manhole covers, split colours, steps, bespoke edgings or decorative design stencils. These will be additional costings to take into consideration.
Can you Install Resin Bound surfacing onto Block Paving?
Whilst resin bound surfacing can in some instances be installed onto block paving for a patio or pathway it isn’t really recommended for driveways due to potential movement of the blocks.
This said, we have experimented over the years with overlaying onto established block paved drives we own ourselves with no issues. These installs are completed at an increased resin depth however, with a textile base over joints and higher ratio to aggregate mixes.
Until we can guarantee an install over block paving for a driveway we wouldn’t recommend it and would opt to remove the blocks and install a new open course base.
Please be wary of cowboy installers
Peterborough Improvements were the first Resin Bound installers in the Peterborough area and have been installing Resin bound surfacing for many years across East Anglia. We know exactly how to install resin bound driveways, patios and pathways and follow strict specifications for base preparation and finishing depths.
Unfortunately with Resin Bound surfacing becoming more and more popular, there are lots of pop up companies installing who have in a lot of cases simply been on a one day ”training course” and don’t have the real experience required with this type of product. Another thing we have seen are companies skimping on materials, leaving you with what might look like a lovely driveway or patio but will quickly in a short period of time fail, usually with the pop up company suddenly no longer trading or returning calls.
Some hints and tips
- Research the company, - ALWAYS search for real reviews from the likes of google rather than trusted trader type sites as these can easily be faked. Simply type into google the companies website and the word "reviews" for example -"peterboroughimprovements.co.uk reviews"
- If considering a limited company check the company via companies house to see if they have any other businesses current or dissolved. You can do this here
- Google the name of any directors / installers using the following format "Joe Blogs + where they are based" this can help find any background information they might not want you to know about.
The bottom line is if anybody prices an installation considerably less than the figures quoted above then be extremely cautious.
As the saying goes “pay cheap, pay twice”.
