Information about our Resin Driveways
Resin bound surfacing is, in simple terms an aggregate (gravel) that is bound together with a polyurethane resin.
There is however a big difference between Resin Bound and Resin Bonded surfacing. Resin bound is a permeable installation where the aggregate is mixed with the Resin in a forced action mixer and then trowelled on. The gaps between the stones allow water to work their way through and into the subtrate below.
With a Resin bonded installation the resin is applied to the install base and the gravel is then scattered on top. This obviously means water cannot penetrate into the subtrate and because the stone is only in contact with the resin at the bottom, this method of install isnt as strong. Peterborough Improvements only install the bound method for our customers in Spalding.
Resin based surfacing is really versatile and is used for a variety of installations including;
- Patio areas
- Internal Flooring
- Pool Surrounds
Both English Heritage and the National Trust approve the use of resin bound paving systems for use in historic sites.
Why Use Resin Bound?
There are a number of reasons people opt for a Resin Bound Driveway over for instance, block paving.
- The surface can be overlayed onto an existing tired looking concrete or tarmac drive meaning little mess and a quick installation time.
- Its extremely hard wearing and requires next to no maintenance (no more weeds)
- Being permeable there are no concerns about where the water is going to run away
- Unlike gravel the surface is easy to walk on and for wheelchair users
Resin bound paving combines the best of both worlds
Listed below are some of the benefits of using resin bound surfacing over block paving, loose gravel, printed concrete or tarmac.

as the product is trowelled on and due to the nature of natural aggregate the surface is textured making it anti slip

How is the Resin installed?
One of the main reasons you wont see Resin surfacing in Spalding as much as block paving for instance is because it has only recently become known to the residential market.
The system is a bit more complicated to install than block paving so the number of companies installing (who know what they are doing) is a lot less than block paving companies.
Since we started installing originally in Peterborough, the number of installs has increased massively. We now install Resin driveways more than we do block paving, as soon as a customer has seen one of our installs in person they no longer consider block paving.
"If you know Peterborough and ever visit Marks and Spencers in Brotherhood retail park you can see our Resin Based surfacing used in parts of their car park."
Our Resin bound system is applied by hand to either an existing suitable base such as concrete or tarmac or to a fresh base installed by ourselved.
One of the most important parts of the installation is the base as if this is not in good enough condition or hasnt been installed correctly the install will ultimately fail.
Another consideration should be given to edging. There are a number of edging options from alluminium strips to blocks and kerb edgings.
If overlaying onto an existing driveway these might need lifting to give the correct height for thr install 18-20mm.
Resin Bound Colours and Styles
There is a nice range of colours we use for our resin bound installations and these can also be mixed should you want to create something unique.
It's difficult to appreciate the finished product on a computer screen thats why we have sample cases we can leave with you should you need some time to make a decision on your colour choice.
